Sioux Falls is the largest city in South Dakota, with a growing human and deer population. The city is surrounded by agricultural fields. The Big Sioux River flows through the city creating a travel corridor for deer. The park system and bike trail follow the Big Sioux River, and it is in these areas that the community experiences high deer populations. In the last 10 years Sioux Falls has implemented a variety of different methods to reduce deer populations in the city. For example, the city worked with the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks to implement an archery program in one region of the city approximately 10 years ago. Since then, the deer population has been growing in the wooded park and bike trail system and complaints to the city concerning deer depredation in adjacent neighborhoods and car-deer accidents reached an all-time high in 2014. At that time the city worked again with the SD Dept. of Game, Fish and Parks to develop a comprehensive Deer Management Plan. Components of the plan include public input, establishing a deer feeding ordinance, extension services, archery hunting and a lethal removal program conducted by the city's Animal Control and Police Department officers. The community is seeing some progress in lowering deer populations yet we are still working to discover new options for dealing with this problem.
